Mississippi Kites, Riverside Gardens, Fairfax Co., VA, 2006
I began following this nest on July 16, 2006 when the adults were still incubating the egg or eggs. One chick was produced. The thumbnail photos in this gallery are sub-galleries arranged chronologically. Clicking on each thumbnail will open a gallery of that day's photos.
The chick hatched between July 16 and July 26. The young bird made short excursions to branches near the nest on Aug 19, and flew for the first time on Aug 23, when it landed as far as 140 ft from the nest tree. As of Aug 24, the fledgling was being fed by parents outside the nest in nearby branches.
Beautiful birds, beautiful photos. Congrats. I also have a Nikon 4300 and, @ 24mm or so, you must have had the priviledge of being very close to the nest.
Cheers,
Antonio Mario
