Since about July 2009 till now, our west Boca Raton gated-community has been blessed with the presence of three river otters. Lately (December 2009), only one has been visiting us on a monthly basis.
When they visited our lake (one among about a dozen or so in the community) our immediate backyard (within 15 feet of our patio) was their preferred fishing spot. Because they were active during the night, my only photo opportunities were in early morning or at sunset and a flash could not be used since it triggered their immediate departure. Generally speaking, the photo conditions have been poor to fair.
While these three otters look cute and cuddly, they are merciless fish catchers, and I have often observed them catching fish "just for sport" often leaving them to die on the grass, just after catching them.
Their second prefered activity, after fish-catching, is grooming and quite often mutual grooming.
They appear to be incredibly attached to each other, showing what could be described as strong affection for one another.
