I met this family early one morning when I set out to hike up and over Cerro Callacpuma - a
prominent mountain that forms a backdrop to the village of Banos del Inca. I needed to cross their
land to reach the ridgeline. Access is nearly always possible through payment of a few peruvian
nuevos soles ... so we made the deal. They seemed happy also to pose for several photos, and were
genuinely impressed to see their images displayed on the LCD of my digital camera. However, upon
seeing this image, the older woman became embarrassed and began groaning, "Mi cabello! Mi
cabello!" ("My hair! My hair!!").
Everyone, it seems, is concerned with looking their best for the camera.
