Wow, that's the back of 1631 Walton and across to the back of the other building where my friend Aida, and her family were Supers of the building! I would say early to mid 70's.

P.S. I also attended C.E.S. 70 on Weeks Avenue, WADE 117 JHS and William Howard Taft HS before moving to the South Bronx where I was transferred to James Monroe HS.

I too was born and grew up in the Bronx and lived in 1769 Townsend Avenue from 1970 to 1980 and moved to the South Bronx for two yrs then to the University Heights area for another five years til I got married and moved to Manhattan. I was born in Lincoln Hospital. I loved my years living in Townsend, it was a nice little neighborhood aside from one or two bad apples that lived there. The neighborhood went very bad after we moved out and our building was torn down and rebuilt very differently. It had been a very comfortable 5 story brownstone with large rooms, high ceilings, natural wood floors and very nice moldings. Our landlady was a very old Jewish lady who only turned on the heat when it was time for her to collect the rent. We slept in our long johns, sweaters and several warm blankets all winter long. But we loved our home, and our neighborhood. Every summer there were block parties and although my parents never let us play outside, we could watch other kids playing in the pump from our windows and fire escape. One year in the early 70's my mom let my older brother take us trick or treating, we were so excited, he took us to a nice neighborhood past Grand Concourse where there lived many older Italian people and they all gave us goodies. One guy threw a bucket of quarters up in the air and we all picked up as many as we could. The mood back then was welcoming and neighborly. The people in my neighborhood were open and friendlier than they are now. Yes, during the 80's, crack became the ruler of the streets and it got really ugly. And may I say proudly that my parents made sure not one of their 5 kids got mixed up in any of that ugliness. My older brother went on to become a Navy Corpsman, my youngest brother graduated from Lehman College with a Bachelor's in Psychology, my little sis moved to California and has a beautiful home and family and works in a large company as a Customer Service Rep, my other younger brother passed away at age 24 from complications due to a medication he was given for schizophrenia but he had always dreamed of becoming a Veterinarian and had spent his childhood helping little kittens, dogs and birds that were injured. I majored in Science and Art at James Monroe High School and went to Borough of Manhattan Community College but dropped out to assist my mother with my brother when he was still alive. I currently have a husband of 25 yrs and 2 adult children and work for a doctor in Manhattan. I think there is a lot of good that has come out of the Bronx that is never mentioned. It is making a come back and I hope some day other generations will be able to tell great stories of their experiences in The Bronx. Thanks for this website!

Hi, it is such a pleasure to see these pictures and all those fine touches that made our world such a special place, like the tiling in the hallways. I moved to this country from Ireland in 1956, when I was 10 years old and I have always considered the Bronx my American home. Burnside, Tremont, Anthony, Echo Place/Park, Ryer, Valentine, St. Margaret Mary's, St. Simon Stock. University Ave., The Concourse, Taft. Stop me.

Took alot of guts for you to go to Mount Eden and take these photos. I saw the comment abt the drug dealer trying to take your camera but appreciate your efforts greatly. I went back once in 1998 to attend a wedding next to the old Surrey Theatre at some catering place and on the way back to the car on Walton, we were starting to be approached by a group of drug dealers so we hightailed it out of there fast. Thanks again. Great work.

Alleyways entered from Walton Avenue. Right entrance (down some steps) is the 1629-31 Walton Avenue building. Second, alleyway entrance is the 1615-17 building on Walton Avenue... with interesting barbed/razor wiring and a fence.
