I was also born at the royal hospital in 1952, but, until this time, had not been able to find out what had happened to that facility. My parents lived in the Bronx and dad worked in Brooklyn navel yards as a welder. I ended up being raised in their Poconos area of Pennsylvania.

I was born in 1930 and we lived on Sedgwick Avenue. My father was a doctor and we moved into the Lewis Morris in about 1933. He had his office there and we had a second apartment where we lived. I went to PS 70 and then to Wade Junior High.
Noticed that the rocks where we played and started fires to roast potatoes is now a new apartment building. Later about 1951 we moved to Riverdale.

Have very fond memories of the Bronx.

I had an eye doctor in Lewis Morris. I remember that building was "different" from the others on the Concourse. It had a mystique all it's own.

Anyone remember Dr. Milton Grand pediatrician? He had an office in the Lewis Morris back in the 50's when it was still a fancy building.
Guest 05-Sep-2013 00:40
The best pediatrician ever had an office at the Lewis Morris, which was quite fancy back in the 50's. Dr. Milton Grand. Later moved offices to Montefiore in the 70's. anyone remember Dr. grand?

I lived at 2865 University Ave., opposite the Reservoir. Then moved to 1005 Jerome Ave and finally moved to 910 Grand Concourse. I attended PS86, Walton HS and Hunter College when it was an all girls school. I think it went down hill when they let the boys in. When I was a student it was a great school. I think NYC was a wonderful place to grow up. There are wonderful museums at no cost. I got a permit to play tennis whenever I wanted for $10 a year. There was a park across the street from my house where you could go roller skating and ice skating in the winter for free and play ping pong indoors also free. In Central Park you could rent a bike and ride on a bicycle path. To quote Frank Sinatra, it's a great town.

I meant to say I wouldn' trade my childhood for any other.
Margie 13-Jan-2013 18:34
Hi my name is Margie, I grew up in Bronxdale project on Watson Ave, in the 60's I got sick one night ended up in ambulance with a mafia guy who got shot in his car he was put in the same ambulance as i was in, he had about six shots in his chest. He was pick up on St Lawerence Ave. Does anyone know about this? Year I think 1963 or 1964.
I would trade my childhood for the experience I had there.

Went back today to see for myself. The alchemical mix of then and now just can't flow together. Better to keep the memories warm and alive in your hearts - where each cherished thought remains vibrantly golden.

My grandfather owned a beauty salon on McCleallon St. just off the concourse. His name was Mr. Simon. Sometimes I would go and help him sweep up the hair from the haircuts. There was a toy/novelty store there where my grandmother bought me my first hula hoop.

Thank-you so much for posting this picture looking north toward the Lewis Morris. I am related to Lewis Morris, for which the building and the Bronx neighborhood, Morrisania, are named. It warms my heart to read all these memories. Thanks again.

I grew up in the Lewis Morris building. We lived there about 10 years from 1959. Many memories. One is wandering the stairwells of the "itchy goomy" as we used to call it. The stairwell was dirty with dust and cobwebs! Old and falling apart. :)

i just spoke with my dad, mike o'grady, and he confirmed that he lived on 174th, born there in fact at home in 1932. they would move a few times within his lifetime, always in this neighborhood, eventually marrying and moving into the lewis morris with my mom in 1958. shortly after, he moved to yonkers but his family maintained residence in this area up until everyone started the exodus to coop city. i look forward to sharing this wonderful pictorial essay with him the next time he visits.

I hope you get this, I grew up on Wilkins Av. and 170 st., We moved into 1427 Wilkins av., in 1934, we moved to Jerome Av., in 1939 But we (my friends and I( allways went back to Benny's candy store. Then the war came, one by one we went into the service. My friends and I are still together after 75 years, I wrote a book, (and was lucky enough to have it published) "Alex; It Started in the Bronx" My wife complains that I'm living in the past. Thanks for letting me sound off. popi24@aol.com Alex Ulrich

My grandparents lived at the Lewis Morris Apartments and I remember crowding into their one-bedroom apartment at Passover with the entire family. Ah, what memories. They lived on a high floor and the window from their bedroom led out to a terrace where Nana grew mint leaves and let us play out there in the summer. They had two entrances to their apartment; the main entrance and the one directly into the kitchen. That's the entrance the seltzer delivery guy would leave the bottles of seltzer. I also remember going to Bronx Lebanon Hospital when my brother was borm in 1955, standing on the street, and waving to my mother who would stand at the window in her room. The majority of my aunts and uncles and cousins lived just off the Concourse.
