St. Lawrence vs Senneca W-Rugby 10-13-10

KINGSTON, Ont. (Oct. 13, 2010) – Meghan Payne-Renaud scored two tries on the day, but the St. Lawrence College Kingston Vikings women’s rugby team fell 22-15 to Seneca Wednesday, Oct. 13 in Kingston, Ont. The loss moves the Vikings record to 1-1-0 overall and the Sting improve to 2-0-0, to lead the OCAA.

The Vikings started off strong driving Seneca deep into their own end. The strong rucking and mauling by the SLC Kingston forwards paid off with a tri by Payne-Renaud at the 12-minute mark to put the Vikings up 5-0. A mental lapse by SLC at the restart allowed Seneca into the SLC end for the first time and the Sting capitalized at the 14-minute mark to even the score at 5-5.

Gaining momentum from its tri, Seneca pressured SLC Kingston and the teams tussled without scoring until the 25-minute mark when Seneca snuck passed the Vikings defence for a tri to go ahead 10-5.

St. Lawrence came right back off the restart and drove Seneca back. Krystin Monger finished off a successful passing play by the backs to draw even at 10-10 as the half ended.

Just four minutes into the second half, Seneca took advantage of a couple of SLC Kingston errors and went up 15-10. Five minutes later, Payne-Renaud evened the score at 15-15 with a tri after a long, strong run by Monger and Dana Darlington, who carried to ball from just inside center to five meters from the goal line.

The game went back and forth until SLC Kingston had a penalty kick, but narrowly missed the extra points after hitting the upright. Seneca returned to score a converted try with eight minutes left in the match to take a 22-15 advantage, which they never relinquished.

Seneca was led by Natalie Tam, who registered two tries and a convert in the win for the Sting. Sharon Nortney and Amanda Grandby were the other two scorers for Seneca.

The Vikings will be in action Saturday, Oct. 16 when they face RMC in the “Prom Dress Game”, the annual fundraiser for the Vikings and the Paladins. The contest will be held on the campus of RMC and is set to start at 11:30 a.m.
