No. 2 Guelph Gryphons Defeat No. 5 Queen's Gaels 50-5 at Nixon Field

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 1, 2016) - The No.5 Queen's Gaels (2-2) were defeated by the No.2 Guelph Gryphons (4-0) on Saturday afternoon in the Queen's game of the week at Nixon Field 50-5.

It marks the second straight week Queen's has taken on a Top 10 team in the CIS losing last weekend to the No.1 Marauders.



GAME FLOW
The first try of the match was put down by Alexandra Everette and the Gryphon conversion was made by Alexandra King making the score 7-0 Gryphons. With an excellent effort by the Gaels, a team effort allowed Queen's to get their first points of the game. The team swung the ball into the far right corner where Lauren Murray (Lindsay, Ont.) beat a defender to make her way in for a try. Continuing the half, the Gaels held strong after giving up points early but the No. 2 Gryphons scored an additional try and conversion taking a lead of 19-5.

Despite keeping a close gap between the Gryphons in the first half, Guelph managed to push an additional 31 points through in the second frame. The Gryphons got their scoring in the second half from on five tries and three conversions making the final score of 50-5 for the No. 2 Guelph Gryphons.

King lead the way for Guelph with one conversion and two tries in the match, while Murray had the lone score for the Gaels.

"We have three teams in the top 5 playing back to back weeks probably the best preparation that we could have for the CIS finals," head coach Beth Barz noted. "That's a big plus for us because it gives us the opportunity to know what we can improve from last week playing the No. 1 team and what we are able to show this week in terms of improvement which was massive. And then what else we need to work on as we continue to get through the season."
