It occurred to me just recently, while walking to pick up the daily paper, that villages evolve whereas subdivisions erupt. Evolution is much more interesting.
Strictly speaking, Portsmouth Village is bounded by Johnson St to the north, Alwington Ave. to the east, the waterfront to the south and Portsmouth Avenue to the west. Roughly the the Kingston Penitentiary Farm property. Within these bounds may be found the afore mentioned penitentiary, the village that sprang up next to the prison and The Canadian Penitentiary Museum, Queen's University West Campus, Queen's Richardson Stadium, St. Lawrence College, Providence Continuing Care Mental Health Services, formerly Kingston Psychiatric Hospital, Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, pockets of late 20th century suburbia, and just outside the village, Lake Ontario Park, a trio of new high rise apartment buildings, and the Cataraqui Golf & Curling Club.
Typically though, around these parts when one states they live in the village, it is the area adjacent the Olympic Harbour that comes to mind.
