I just found your site and could not believe that some of your videos are in Marion, Ohio. I grew up there and had six uncles that worked for the Erie Lackawana and or C&O railroads. I'm 73 years old but as a kid in the 1950's Marion was a railroad town. I think there used to be five or six railroads operating there. You could not drive through town without waiting on a train. Long coal trains headed north and long empties going back south to be reloaded.
Just wanted to let you know it brought back a lot of good memories. Your layout is nice, I'm envious. I had a full basement layout in the 1970's when my boys were young. I had a neighbor who also had a full basement layout and we would help each other build and operate. Great time of my life. Keep up the excellent work.

John Bellucci 04-Jan-2016 05:11
Hey Big Al,

Did you do a video where you showed your method for creating mortar on brick walls, using - I think - spackling compound? I've been searching through your YouTube video archives, but I'm unable to find it ... if it was even you. LOL!!! Thanks!
Arthur Burghardt 08-Oct-2015 21:05
Mr. Mayo, I enjoy you and your fine site and mastery of modelling & weathering over at youtube...I laugh loudly & wholeheartedly at your good-natured palaver and, brother, I see why so many knuckleheads are unfortunately so very jealous of you, your happiness, your lovely family & your skills! There are so many others - like myself - who deeply admire you, for it's evident that you've done so much good. I wish, however, to offer a minor correction for a statement you made regarding being the "ONLY" Black model (& oldest black model) railroader you know... LOL LOL... NAW, little brother, I AM! LOL... My father - a college professor who became the president of a school - used to take my little brother David & I down to the Pennsy passenger & REA freight/mail terminal at Baltimore to watch the big locomotives come through where I fell in love with GG-1's & T-1's & where dad explained to us steam/water pressure/hydraulics & tractive force, etc., field theory & electric fields etc., and indeed what he knew of it all & looking back at what he shared with us of his knowledge was considerable. & your rapport with your rapport with your little boy so profoundly reminds me of me & my dad & model railroading. He worked on the railroads - Pennsy & NY Central as a gandydancer while he went to school in NYC and before he met my mom! We were stuck in Hurricane Jane I think it was in '54 in Durham, NC when he managed to buy two plastic Athearn (!) dummy HO F3A locomotives & gave them to us. We boys slept with our locomotives. 3 Years later in Atlanta, we got got the real stuff - actual motive power - Dad tried to start an HO (our family FAVORITE guage) 4 X 8 layout which the three of us worked on whenever we could and dad purchased a subscription to Model Railroader Magazine... Model railroading & dreaming of being an engineer was a welcome distraction to the racism & incivility of the barbarous American South during those years! I enjoy your work, your marvelous craft AND your BANTER... never change that, my brother. Warm regards, all the very best, Arthur Burghardt

I've known you for many years, but I've never knew this side of you. And just to think, I GAVE away my layout 2 years ago to someone I met at Skips. Wait until I see you again and I will reveal who I am.
I first saw your video on the flood.
Laterness.

I like your simple but efficient methods about weathering, detailing, grafitti, etc. as you demonstrate and explain in your uploaded vids in such an easy way "for dummies". Your proven techniques are applicable at any model railroad scale (from Z to G). Myself I work lately on O gauge 3-rail by scratch-building and hand-painting exotic train models, as you eventually may have seen in my youtube channel "likosjo". Your vids are a great help, which give me new inspiration to produce more realistic models.
Robert 10-Oct-2012 10:25
Your vids are really helping!

Big Al, You are the best. Don't worry about the haters. You have far many admirer's. I just started Model Railroading and I have learned so much for you. Although watching you costs me money for all the #$^t I buy. Just purchased the weathering powders and an airbrush. Big shoutout and thanks to you Brother for all the inspiration!

Guest 06-May-2010 18:33
Thanks for the tips on your youtube channel. I used them to attempt my first weathered hopper in O scale.
I am sure my skill will improve as I continue to weather more items. I need to get some detail decals for this item and it will be done.

Nice site al, thanks for all the help you have given me with my layout, well haven't started yet gotta get ideas., My first layout was n-scale 2 4x8 boards. But it was in garage, and gets easily ruined., wanna do HO cause the units look better, and is less expensive, or so i thought, i haven't tried dcc, or dc, so i need to read up on it. Will dcc,or dc work with older athearn units, like sd40-2, old t-2's, and so on, i have some older cotton belt gp 60's. Is dcc better than dc etc. Thanks Al keep up the good work.

Came across your videos on You-Tube via a random search. You do some very nice work!! I'm glad to see someone your age enjoying the hobby, seems fewer and fewer youth are into Model Railroading. You have a talent for art and express it beautifully in your layout. Love the Indiana Jones scene! lol

Keep up the great work! jeff, Bellevue, NE

hey
to be honest, if i saw u on the street, i wouldnt thhink u were a model railroader.
Im 17 years old in high school and listen to rap, ride skateboards, and love to drink and party. But none of my friends know i love model trains. Ever since i was little ive
wanted to build a modern 4x8 layout in my garage but never got to it cuase of wat my
friends would think. But after waching you and ur vids ive decided to start working on a NorCAl Southern Pacific layout. Thanx for the inspiration. I love ur layout. please reply so i could ask for helpfull tips.
