El Fantasma de La Roma, Colonia Roma
Lucha Libre, a popular spectator sport in México, draws hundreds of aficionados. Winning wrestlers attain heroic and mythic fame.
On my first visit to México City, February, 1992, I met "Super Hawk", a retired wrestler, while having breakfast at VIP'S Restaurante at Ave. Insurgentes and Calle Dinamarca. He was eating "panqúe" (a slice of poundcake) y café.
(I had the desayuno combinado, with a surprise fruit and yoghurt cup. I don't remember what style of eggs I ate. :-)
That's a good introduction to México.

Hurry by, skirting this "haunted house".
You can buy a torta from a stand in front. I haven't tried any.

This entryway, with the hanging lantern, is a favorite of mine.

Bife de Chorizo at La Parrilla Argentina, Colonia Roma
This oddly named cut of beef, one of several from which to choose at La Parrilla Argentina, is thick and juicy. It has nothing to do with "chorizo" as we know it. Most steaks are served with Papas Francesas.

La Parrilla Argentina-A neighborhood steakhouse, Colonia Roma
This is a cozy little restaurant at Calle Manzanillo No.81, Colonia Roma Sur, between Calle Aguascalientes y Calle Tlaxcala. It's open from 13 to 20 hours.
The menu is mostly about beef. The churrasco is recommended. Salads are good, and there's a reasonably priced selection of wines.
Desserts are skippable, with the possible exception of the ate con queso fresco.

Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia on Calle Jalapa, north of Av. Álvaro Obregón, Colonia Roma
A friend and fellow aficionado of la Ciudad de México writes:
"Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia - is/was a church constructed by the Jesuits, who took a special interest in the Roma neighborhood. Though not an old church, construction having taken place in the 1920's - it's somewhat historic."
