Voyage from South Africa to Italy on m/v Europa, 1966

Back to Italy after 7 years living in Mozambique. Voyage on the Lloyd Triestino liner m/v Europa, from Durban to Venice, stopping along the East African coast. Photos taken with my Zorki-4, with its original Jupiter f2 50mm lens. Stopping in the duty free port of Aden on this trip it was complemented with a Tokina 200mm lens.

Tim Gibbs thanks! I've found some old correspondence and yes, it was the same voyage. We sailed from Durban on 23rd August and arrived in Venice on 10th September. I have more photos and even 8mm film which I have had digitized, which I would gladly share. I will send you an email.

Wonderful photos. I travelled on the Europa in1966 from Beira to Venice. The Crossing the Line Celebration (I was a Triton) was 1st September 1966 and since I recognize a few people from your photo, we must have been on the same voyage. I have a copy of the Line programme and several menus (Captain’s dinner etc.). I can make copies if interested.

Was on Europa from Mombsa to Brindisi in 1962 , from Dar to Capetown and back in 1965 and fro Dar to Trieste in 1966

I just realised that the link to the 1961 trip on the sister ship m/v Africa was not updated, it referred to an old version of the video in which the soundtrack had been zeroed due to copyright issues. In 1967 we met Sister Helene Kessler off the ship travelling from Switzerland to be a missionary in Lesotho. We were in Durban for the first time - a magical and historical moment. Thank you for the lovely photos and all the other contributions.

I sailed on a Lloyd Triestino sister ship, MV Asia, from Bombay to Venice in 1966. We called at Aden and Port Said. I got off the ship for a tour of the Pyramids and Sphinx and then joined her again in about eight hours for the trip to Europe. I think we stopped in another Suez port, but I can't remember which one. Does anyone here know?

I traveled from Trieste to Durban in the spring of 1969 with my family of five. I was three years old but have memories of a steward that gave me a helicopter that I cherished. I also remember the equator crossing party. I am now working on cruise ships, the first time back on a ship since I was three and am having all these memories.

Good memories and nice photographs. Mine became just colorless with time. I sailed with my wife on the Europa in 1967 from Cape Town to Trieste having just escaped from the chaos in Katanga (Congo). Our ship was the last one to pass through the Suez canal prior to the outbreak of the seven day war with Israel. The 24 day voyage (in first class) was a welcome change to the stresses experienced during the last weeks of stay and our flight from Katanga.

Life is so magical ,even in the midst of all the chaos that is the most utterly dreadful state of the Middle East at the moment ,I had the most fortunate few hours discussion of a time and a place that now only belongs in our history books.....only a few days ago! A wonderfully entertaining Italian gentleman in every sense of the word ....we somehow got onto the subject of the fact that I had sailed through the Suez on the Africa ,in the early sixties, leaving Nigeria,and the start of the Biafran War.From Durban to Italy ,even stopping at Tripoli. I must have been only very young ,but I shall never forget everything about that trip.....I even learnt how to eat spaghetti with just a fork......and standing on the deck at the same level as the camels being ridden alongside the Suez was incredible .The only thing I failed to remember during our conversation was the name of the Shipping Line ....aaah, age ! So to find this wonderful gallery was quite most amazing . Thank you for sharing your beautiful photography... Coincidence, I think not .

I remember only too well my voyage on the magnificent ship Europa from Durban to Venice. I travelled with my sister Patricia and then I returned to South Africa again in 1956. I was only 11 years old and I was onboard all alone this time... and what an experience! www.panton.it

My family travelled on the Europa to Trieste in December 1963, leaving our beloved home, Kenya, for good. Wonderful memories brought back with your images ... The only time I have ever seen the 'mystical' green flash as the sun disappeared over the horizon. Stepping out on to the deck from the air conditioned interior felt like being walking into a wall of heat. The boats swarming around the ship at Port Said and the horrible guli guli man who shoved tiny yellow chicks back into his pockets once their use was over. The wonderful radio man, who played requests, pop music and Italian crooners. Sailors fishing in the canal ... how healthy would the catch have been? Bringing octopus up on the deck, turning them inside out and bashing the day lights out of them on deck! Some bad but outweighed by the extraordinary memories.

Very beautiful and nostalgic pictures, reminding me on my travel in October 1966 when I was 23 years old leaving Mauritius to marseille on Jean Laborde, docking at Tamatave, Diego Suarez, majunga, commore Island,mombassa,Dar us salaam Djibouti,ports aid, Suez Canal, Alexandria and marseille. I travelled on the Europa as a 6 year old boy (in 1963) with my family from Dar es Salaam to the UK. We were leaving Tanganyika (as then was) for the last time. Many very happy memories of this trip. Lovely photos.

Your beautiful slides bring back a ton of memories. I traveled on the Europa from Cape Town to Trieste in Nov 1971. Took the west coast route. Remembered talking to a young adventurer sitting at the harbor in Tenerife hoping to find a ship to take him to South America. His only possessions were his shorts and his passport as far as I could see. It was a time of free spirits and vagabonds.

In 1960 I was 20 and travelled on the EUROPA with my five years old son Franco, from Trieste to Durban. I could not speak a word of English. Although afflicted from seasick, we really enjoyed the fantastic 22 days on the beautiful ship, through Suez Canal. Great photos that bring back a flood of fond memories. I travelled with my family from Durban to Brindisi aboard Europa in August-September 1959. Ports of call were: Beira, Dar es Salaam, Mombassa, Mogadishu, Aden, Suez and Port Said. This was Europa's last northbound voyage before undergoing a major refit that saw the air conditioning extended to the whole ship and the replacement of the dormitory accomodation on C Deck with standard 2 and 3-berthed cabins.

I was traveling on m/v Europa from Trieste to Cape Town. It appears that Lloyd Triestino used different routes on the west coast trips to Africa during the closure of the Suez canal. The trip I was on started on the 23 of July 1974 in Trieste, then to Venice, Messina, Naples, Cannes, Barcelona, Tenerife, and Cape Town. I was 21 and the parties never stopped. Your gallery brings back the best of memories.

Fantastic! I sailed with my family on the Europa from Cape Town to Trieste in 1975. At that time, with the Suez shut, they sailed up the west coast of the continent and there were no stops between Walvis Bay and the Canary Islands. This makes me all nostalgic… Thanks again!
