As mentioned, most of the time you want to be shooting at f/22 or more anyways, so the full force of the flash is not such a problem. Makes sense that some respect has still to be paid to the max sync speed of the camera - even in manual, after all it is still flash. Have had best results at 1/200 and 1/250 sec, I think around the x sync speed of the camera anyway.
