Advice for a newbie: Your camera can't take pictures without you, you can't take pictures without your camera - therefore, in photography, you and your camera are one. "Would have, could have, should have"...I've seen hundreds of photos of place that I have been and said 'I would have taken that shot from this angle, He should have waited til the sun was lower, she could have blah, blah, blah" The fact of the matter is that he/she has the shot and I don't because they had their camera with them and I didn't. Photography is dead simple: there are a million killer photos out there every day, all that you have to do is go out, stand in front of those great shots and press the shutter. All of the rules, tips, guidelines and discoveries will be of no value if you don't obey Eddy Vortex's first rule of photography (read sentence #1 again): YOU GOTTA BE THERE!!!

Advice for a newbie: Take your cam and go out. Take photos. As much as you can. You have a digital cam, you can shot and delete as much as you want. In har d light conditions, use manual mode. Take you cam always with you, when you left it at home, you will get the perfect motive ;-). And, whts most importend: "Have fun!"

I live in Devonport, Auckland, New Zealand, which is at the bottom-left of the Pacific Ocean.
Camera Models: Sandra still uses the D-490ZOOM P&S camera. It works for her. The C-750UZ was used here from 2003 to 2007, it is now with her daughter's boyfriend. The Stylus 800 took over from the D-40 as a pocket camera. The SP-550UZ has become a backup. Since April 2008 the SP-570UZ is the camera I take everywhere. I have photographed birds - sitting down and in flight - aircraft, buildings, flowers, ships, amateur radio amd Morris dance events, even some glamour (the lady s now my business partner).
I use the movie modes extensively. During Morris dance engagements the cameras take videos when mounted on the accordeon as I am playing.
Software: I use PSE2 with the 'NeatImage' plug-in for noise control.
Advice for Newbies: I can give advice on some matters photographic and otherwise, but I have no universally applicable bits of wisdom.

Advice for a newbie: I am not really expert enough in the art of photography to be giving anybody professional advise, having taken my first digital photograph only some 3 years ago, and having no film experience, other than taking the very occasional snap shot.
But, what I have come to learn over the past 2.5 years is to keep posting on OTF and take the advice of those who inspire you, they will help help you in your technique. There are a lot of very competent photographers here, and should you choose to follow their lead in the types of photography you wish to embrace (landscape, portrait, street, etc), your abilities and techniques will improve substantially over time. Read,observe, experiment, and ask questions.
