CHALLENGE 68 --- On the Rails, a Celebration of our Railways

In October 1829 Robert Stephenson entered his new locomotive the Rocket; into the Rainhill Trials and won the competition for the Stephenson’s to build the new Liverpool to Manchester railway. This was to be the first passenger railway in the world. Now nearly everyone on the planet has access to a railway. The romance of taking the train is still strong for most of us.

The railways have brought us wealth and prosperity, they also introduced a whole new genre of easy to read books for those long journeys. Let us not forget also the thrillers that have become so famous, Murder on the Orient Express, The 39 Steps and of course Strangers on a Train...

This Challenge is to capture the romance, the desolate station, the old booking hall, you name it, we love rail travel. I leave the titles up to you and other than the photograph depicting the railway the challenge is fairly open.

Please give your submission a title. All entries must have a title. The Challenge is open to all members of the Olympus Talk Forum who joined before the beginning of the Challenge period and the photos must be taken with an Olympus digital or DSLR camera. The Host has elected not to submit an entry nor to participate in the voting.

Challenge entries and Exhibition Gallery submissions should be sent to the following e-mail address:

The submissions should be sized to no more than 800 pixels on the longest side and under 200 kb.

Please use the word “Challenge” or “Exhibition” in the subject heading.

Be sure to include your Olympus Talk Forum name and a title for your images. Also, send the photo as an attachment as some e-mail programs strip the EXIF data from embedded images. Images without an EXIF intact will not be accepted.

Challenge entries (limit 1 per member) must be taken during the challenge period starting Sunday, October 12, 2008 and ending at 11:59 PM GMT on Monday, October 27, 2008.
