CANKIRI

Although the northern edge of Cankiri is laid on the southern slopes of Ilgaz Mountains of Black Sea region, the province center and most of its physical land is clearly in the Central Anatolian Region. Aside from the Ilgaz slopes the whole land is either arid or suitable for wheat growing. Cankiri is about two hours of bus ride from Ankara on the way to Kastamonu.

The main attractions include the fortress in the city which has a beautiful southerly view of the town. The . Mosque which has the synthesis of old Roman short columns in a Moslem mosque. Then there is the first shifahane where the first usage of the symbol of medicine is being used in an Anatolian structure. And about 20 km towards east there is the Koca Mese which is an old oak tree. Its name implies not of its age but rather its size. It is truly a huge oak tree. It takes about 8 people to embrace its trunk. Its age is said to be over 500 years.

An up coming attraction of Cankiri is the salt mines. While they are closed to public for now, with some special permission from the authorities you may visit them. It is told that these mines were being excavated continuously from the Roman times. The galleries in it are large enough to have an eighteen wheel truck to be able to make a u-turn freely. That should give an idea of its size. The governorship has plans to develop this mine as an attraction grounds like the one in Cracow, Poland.
