Grasshopper Suicide

Houston, TX

I found this sad affair while waiting for the sun to set. At first, I thought that the grasshopper was sitting on the fence. When I approached to try to take a picture, the reality of the situation became apparent.

If you are not familiar with the antics of the Loggerheaded Shrike (LSor "Butcher Bird", this may appear as odd. You will find things impailed on barbed wire, limbs of trees or other pointed objects. The LS will catch its prey (small birds (dove, robbins, etc.), lizards, large flying bugs) and impail it to rip off the flesh and eat. Their call is like a long squeek from a non-oiled door hinge. One of my most favorite birds. They are not scared of humans, so you can approach them well. Look for them..they are colored a lot like a mocking bird, but have a large black mask around their eyes and a greyish blue head. They pirch on barbed wire fences and up on high wires, looking for prey. I witnessed one robbing a baby robin right out of the nest and the mom robin wouldn't challenge it at all. Shrikes do not hve the same attitude as mocking birds, but I understand mocking birds will kill live stuff much like a shrike does...
