Character
I love this shot because of the setting, the light, and the way his character shines through.

Who I am
Because this is a big part of who I am.

Sadness
A photograph where one can really see sadness in his eyes.

Connie and Lux
Because this is the love of my life and our grand daughter Lux.

Whidbey Island Cabin
Our oldest son Patrick and his wonderful wife Nicole rented this incredible cabin on Whidbey Island, Washington for us for two months last summer (2019). Many incredible memories were made here.

Angry Sky
This was shot at Empire Ranch in Sonoita, Arizona while I was attending a light painting photography workshop. While we were waiting for evening light, I watched this storm approach very rapidly and felt quite fortunate to be at the right location for this amazing shot.

Enjoying every precious moment.

There's always time for coffee.
Shot in Tombstone, Arizona.

Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge
This is a photograph that should not exist.
My wife and I were returning home to Albuquerqe from a short trip to Tucson and were tired and hungry and just wanted to get home. As we approached the San Antonio exit on I25 we spontaneously decided to visit Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge as it isn't but a 20 minute detour and I had never been there in the evening.
What a wonderful decision that turned out to be!

Capture Yourself
A Beautiful Mess - Photo Idea Book by Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman.
There's just something exciting about going to the library and looking for creative ideas to improve one's photography.

Caged
Created on Christmas day 2019. I wanted to spark my creative juices and this is what I envisioned. An egg inside a wisk with a metal texture added.

Valles Caldera in New Mexico; one of the most beautiful places on earth.

When I stopped to chat with this wonderful lady, she had such a gentle soul and uplifting spirit, I asked if I could take a photograph. I knew I wanted to remember her for many, many years.

As this gentleman approached me I was reading a hundred stories in his face and knew that a photograph would do the same. I hope his real stories are less desperate than what I have imagined.
13-SEP-2012
More than any other photograph I have taken depicting the ravages of poverty; this gentleman's condition brought home the sometimes hopeless desperation of having absolutely no support system for survival.
27-JUL-2013
There is something in the intensity in her eyes that contrasts so well with the casual nature of her style that brings a certain tension to this photograph that is hard to find and capture.
22-SEP-2012
I love the color, mood, and playfulness of this photo.

Ahhhh the passion of Tango!
14-JUL-2012
The lighting, her outfit, and the weariness in her eyes were perfect subject material.
14-OCT-2006
When I took this shot in October of 2006, I had only been shooting digital for a year, and hadn't touched a camera for at least 20 years prior.
For each of us as photographers, there is one moment or one shot that motivates us to pick up the camera with a renewed inspiration to create something unique, artistic, or poetic.
This was my shot!

A soccer dad watching his daughter play, I was amazed at the intensity in his eyes even from 30 yards away. This was a "can't miss this shot" photograph.

I hadn't met Popeye (Thomas) yet when I took this shot from about 20 yards away. He was so small and fragile looking and reminded me of a shy little mouse praying for protection.
Weeks later, when I had an opportunity to talk with him for several hours, I was struck by his intelligence and wisdom. When I rose to leave I asked him if he remembered my name and he replied: "I'm homeless Geoff, I'm not stupid or simple-minded".
I left his company that day feeling humbled and embarassed that I would think of him in any way less fortunate than I.

I really like primate shots and this is certainly one of my favorites.
25-MAY-2009
Although artistically edited in Photoshop, this is one of my favorite nature photos.
I had a sense of ancestral evolution; but not of man evolving from inferior ape;
but rather of the grace that man can aspire and evolve to as portrayed in the photograph.

It was the self-confidence that belies her years that was so stiking to me.
Almost like she knew where beauty would take her and the likely privelege she would enjoy.
I have never seen anything quite like it before.

When I took this shot (waist up), I thought his Harley Davidson tee shirt told his story; however when I began to edit the photo I quickly saw a lifetime written in his face.
A life of motorcycles, bars, and fights; but also a life of hard work and strong values.
I vertically shortened the crop to draw attention to the battle scars on his nose and the weariness in his eyes.

Ryan is homeless living on the streets of Las Vegas. He is unfortunately mentally ill, but is very friendly and talkative regailing me with stories; many believable, some not so much.
This photograph best reflects his warm and friendly nature and captures the essence of his spirit.
05-APR-2009
With most people and with most shots, it's the face that tells a thousand stories. For this homeless man, it was his hands.
These two hands that have done bone-weary work; been exposed to a lifetime of freezing cold and searing heat day-in and day-out; that have held meager portions of food to survive a few more hours.
And on this day hands to hold his sign and hands to express himself to another stranger in hopes of touching a heart.

This shot of a high mountain meadow in Tucson Arizona is one of the few landscape shots that I like.
I tend to avoid landscapes because they rarely depict the actual natural beauty of a scene as viewed through the human eye (at least through my eyes).
This photo was an exception. It really was this beautiful.
26-JUN-2006
Mountain Storm over Tucson is another rare landscape from me.
The approaching storm and the light were just too perfect to pass up.

Sunset Flight
Sometimes our favorite photos have nothing to do with technical perfection or artistic creativity, but rather symbolism.
A few moments after this photograph was taken, I received a call that my mother had just passed away.
Jane Stilwell Smith was everything that is good and beautiful in this world.
