Going to the Pathirakaliyaman Temple at Madappuram it is really a feast for the children. They are dressed up in their finest clothes, sitting here next to the puja or offering that the parents just bought at one of the stalls outside the temple.
They learn here the sense of real devotion from young. The atmosphere is at the same tensed by the intens devotion of adults and at the same joyful by all the children.

The hair of the little girl was shaved as an offering to God for blessings and a good health. The yellow powder on her head is turmeric to protect her skin from the burning sun and to avoid skin cancer.

Offering the hair is done in the South for centuries finding it rock carved in the temples at Mamallapuram of the 13th century. It is a way to come to God in all nakedness undone from all materialistic beauty and pride to pray in all modesty to Him.
