Indeed the Tsunami renewed and doubled the fleet of fishermen boats here in Mamallapuram, all brand new, so the fishermen are better off. Before the Tsunami they were never able to buy such a polyester boat.
All fits in to the plan of the government to make Mamallapuram a satellite town of leisure for the rich people of Chennai and to invite foreign politicians to the remarkable historical remains of the Pallava dynasty ruling here in the 13th century. So the local fishermen have to remain as an extra attraction with their new boats.
