Twinkeling Eyes

Madurai

Mostly I deny children as they can be so imposive in India, they all want to be on the photo.
This boy was well educated or controlled by mother nearby that I took the chance to make a
very close portait of him. He pushes his chin forward slightly aside and that made him funny.
A tip:
Never go shooting in compound areas when children have leave from school or soon a bunch of
over-enthusiastic children will chase you after, jumping into your frame, waving their hands in
front of the camera. Enoying, spoiling your appetite for focussing daily life, leaving soon :).

Great portrait, this child certainly has character! If I may suggest, the small yellow band at left could be cropped out to maintain the beautiful unity of red tones (and complementary greenish).

Thanks for your info. One more question: what shooting mode were you using? Aperture priority, shutter priority or manual?.... Thanks!

Hi Steven, nice to ask, first it was a cloudy day so I went up already in ISO, second I always use at least 200 sec to avoid blur and thirdly I wanted still to have a recognizable bicycle in the background while I was really close to the boy, on portraits really close you need higher then 2,8 to avoid that you got only f.i. his nose sharp and the rest blurred here spotfocus on the eyes... I hope this is enough info ?

I have a question for you. I noticed that your aperture was set at 6.3 and ISO was at 800. I know "experts" always say you should use a wide apeture for portraits, such as F2.8, so why did you use F6.3? (Even though you used 6.3 you still have a nice bokeh). Was this one of those times where you were just shooting and you didn't know what shot you were going to get; thus, you just happened to have your camera set at 6.3? Or was the 6.3 stop purposely used for this shot? Just a curious thought about detail.... And also, why ISO 800? It seems like a there's a lot of light in the shot... Ok, thanks for your info!
