Puranas

Madurai

Detail of the wall-painting at the Meenakshi-tank

The wall-painting is about 2,5 high, has 5 rows of pictures and will be at least 30 m long when finished. I took the photo when the painter was at meter 5, still a long way to go.

This is a preview as they are renovating this wall-painting of the Puranas, the legends of all the Gods like Shiva, Ganesh, Skanda .....

A man from Kerala is the artist, they told me, and he comes to paint whenever he likes, sometimes he stays for months away. In the meanwhile the painting is covered with plastic but I was lucky this day as that man had worked for one day the day before and the covering plastic was still removed, hanging on the staging. I sneaked under the plastic and got my shots.

It is an enormous painting telling all the stories of the Puranas. These legends are also written in Tamil on white marble stone, the other side of the tank.
