Great pics! My husband was one of the Army Rangers dropped in that day in October 1983. Do you have any more pics of Urgent Fury? He has just now began to tell me about this part of his life. Thank you for your service!God Bless!

AWESOME photos Oly - I was w/ the 1/508 (B Co.) and those bring back so many memories, brother! May I put a link to the gallery on facebook (and will credit you even though they are (c))?

P.S. - frickin' Rangers and their camo dirt-bikes lol. I was jealous of those damn things!

Enjoyed your Operation Urgent Fury pictures! Was a Platoon Leader in A Co. 2/325 at the time. Had only been in the Division a couple months. Our Company was the IRC of the DRF 1 and I was lucky enough to have Staff Duty at Battalion when we were alerted.

Thank's for posting!

Hey thanks for dropping in Sir! The Army was a great springboard and I'm always proud to say "Army" when the Air Force and Navy pukes I fly with ask me what branch I served with. :-)

Thanks Oly for your comment. I have adapted one of my Russian telescope mounts for the camera and will now experiment with it (one axis tracking only). I presume that you turn on the long shutter noise feature in the camera when you take a deep sky shot (presumably this a dark frame subtraction). Do you use something like Deepskystacker?

Hello Waqidi,

I use an astro tripod with clock drive so that the telescope moves with the stars/moon. This helps with focusing as you will need the star to be a very bright one and very still in the view screen for focusing (if it's moving it's almost impossible to do it). Once you locate a bright star somewhere in the neighborhood of where you wish to take a photo, zoom in on it with 10x magnification, wait for the image to settle and focus in/out on that one bright star. Make sure that you have your telescope/lens friction set so that it will hold focus. Using a camera lens and camera tripod without tracking it's very very hard to do. If you have an astro tripod and wish to use camera lenses with autofocus they will often focus properly on a very bright star.

In the mean time consider stopping in to the forums on CloudyNights.com for a wealth of information and ideas regarding astro photography and telescopes.

Cheers, Oly

After seeing your great moon photo I bought a Panasonic G1! I am having trouble seeing star images in the magnified LCD screen or electronic viewfinder. There is a considerable noise on the screens in semi-dark conditions. With the moon I can focus ok as the magnified image is fairly clear. What camera settings and techniques do you use for focusing on stars, nebulae, etc?

I am currently not connecting to any of my telescope but using the 40-200mm zoom that comes with the camera. Perhaps in darker conditions the camera screens will show a black background versus the blue that I see in semi-dark sky conditions in a urban setting.

Keep up the great work.

I use Photoshop CS3 and/or Lightroom for most of my RAW development and post processing work. For image resizing I prefer to use FastStone Photo Resizer, it's excellent and free. Many of the images on my site are JPEGs directly from an Olympus DSLR. The Olympus software you're thinking of is called Studio. I don't like it and only use it to update my camera and lenses.

Best,
Oly
