Every Day is an Adventure on the Road

This was another campsite that I stayed at up in the mountains.

It had been really windy for a couple of days while I was there. On one of those days, I woke in the middle of the night and had to go to the bathroom. I was standing in front of the car taking care of business when all of the sudden I heard a loud crack. A few seconds later this huge tree falls down about two feet from where I’m standing. When the tree hit the ground, all of the dead branches on the underside of the tree broke off and flew in every direction. It was pretty crazy. Amazingly, only one of them hit me.

It was really dark outside and I couldn’t see very well, so I decided to go back to sleep. I figured that I would assess any damage that might have occurred in the morning. When I woke up the next day, I realized two things, somehow the tree and all of the branches had totally missed my car, but the tree had fallen across the dirt road, which was the only way out.

I was pretty far from the main road, so thought I was going to have to hike out and find someone with a chain saw. However, just as I was getting ready to leave (I had literally taken like three steps) here comes this full size truck driving down this tiny remote dirt road towing a huge trailer behind it. The truck pulled up in front of the tree and two guys got out and said that they were looking for firewood for the winter. I said, how about this tree? To make a long story short, they gave me something to drink, we talked for a little while and then they spent the next couple of hours cutting up the tree and removing it from the road. Oh yeah, and as a result of this encounter, I was also led to my next camping spot. Funny how things work out sometimes.
