Stunning....

Thanks everyone! It is definitely a reflection off water, not a mirage. However, the water is very shallow and lies over almost perfectly level ground. Mirages appear at longer distances, you'd need a strong telephoto lens for that and it would look more shimmery. I'll try it on the same playa sometime :).

I don't know this is the best composition of this scene I made that afternoon, but it is in a tie for top 4, and displays the most "atmosphere" (sky and clouds) of those top choices. The others have tighter framing.

Looks like a Salvadore Dali. The smitten life as a dream.

This is a fabulous shot! So it's a mirage? I've never seen anything like it.

Very surreal, excellent composition. In a word, atmospheric!

This is for sure a favorite of mine. I find the entire scene to look as if it was fabricated with photoshop, but at the same time, I know it isn't. Love it!

I agree with Brad - it is reminiscent of Dalí. Excellent shot.

Transparent air and clear horizon! You caught a very singular atmosphere here, and these remains in the foregroud aids to enhance this appearance. I would wish to visit a dried lake like this.

I spent a month in Winnemucca one night. I can see it turned your world upside down :D. this is just so bizarre that it must be real. --Stefan

to me this has almost a Salvador Dali look,,,or if your were into computer games 10 years ago,, "Myst",, very nice composition and the time of day, you received some great lighting angles

I often wondered what those summer dry lakes looked like in the wetter months. great shot
