The Coal Tit L 10-11,5cm (3.9-4.5") breeds in needleleaf forests, particularly with high pines. Locally in pine forests or mixed woodland. Food is mostly conifer seeds, insects and spiders in the top of the pines, but also at knocked down trees or cliff rifts. The Coal tit is a small colourless version of the Great tit, and has a similar black head with a large white nape spot, and a narrow white wing bar, and a second wing bar of 3 small spots on the secondary coverts. The head is larger with a more plumb neck. The under part is beige toned and grey-white. The pronounced white neck spot is seen from the back. If irritated or nervous it raises often the cap feathers as a little top. The back is blue-grey (UK olive-toned). |
