Saturday morning, June 17, 2006, I had camera in hand and a little time to stroll down Main Street. What a shame that conditions have been allowed to deteriorate like this! There were lots of memories of what it used to be like. (Click on thumbnail to view full size photo with description.)
To: Tom, Stanley, Linda, and Ginger,
Thanks, you guys. You have made me remember many memories of the past, when Bishop was a
gloriously busy "young" town. The deterioration shown on these photos of my beloved hometown seem to belong in a fictional movie of the year 2099, not 2006.
Sadly, the old Moerbe & Michalk Grocery store in which I labored did not show up on the photos. I remember also working at the Mayes Ice Station after working at Moerbe's. The old jail seems to be missing which used to lean against the Mayes building-or did I miss it? Question: Is the Texas theater sign still up? Do you know if it is for sale? Just
curious for now.
On one of the pictures, a comment stated that Johnny Michalk had moved his State Farm office to the Super S Store. This is misinformation. I was working for a few years at the
store when the M & M families bought it out. I first worked for Bonham's Foods at that
building. Then, a family from Corpus named Seward bought it out. About a year later, the
M & M families bought it out. I worked with them until I left Bishop to work in Corpus.
Say hi to everyone who remembers me.
Again, Thanks for the photos. They are a treasure to me, altough, a little painful.

Tom, So good to hear from you. I am going to McMahan this week end and will read you e-mail to Uncle Leland. He will be interested in your comments. He is doing OK for someone who is 92. Am so sorry to see down town Bishop go like this. Louise and I have so many memories of our summers there. Tell Tim hello from us and hope to see you soon. Love, Jolene

These pictures are so sad. I only lived in Bishop for a year, 7th grade, many years ago (1964-65). I can't believe a town can get in such bad shape. It was a great place to live in the 60's. Thanks for posting the pictures. Al Baethge forwarded them to me (Thanks Al).
