Latests Curve Tests

This page : tests out my latest curve designs on the Nikon D70 ; all shots are pure out of camera captures and no post processing for accurate comparisons.

Looking for handling of each colour channel
Contrast between black and white
Progression of exposure through each shade of gray
Highlight control at 247
Overall exposure calibrated at 18% gray / 128

All images taken on Nikon D70 with following settings
Colour space 1a apart from the betas using aRGB
Hue +3
sReala tone - download link above
Sharpening +1
NEF
Cloudy -1 / Sunny -2

All images shown here at pure out of camera shots with no post processing, sharpening or cropping. NEF converted to JPG good quality (80%)

Conclusion from these tests : providing your meaturing is accurate, i've found some very accurate results produced from this curve. I honestly didnt find a single case of clipping or blowing on each of the RGB channels. Especially noted on the red channels. This curve aims to squeeze more dynamic range out of your D70 and a good example was provided in these tests that showed no major clipping or blowouts on the highligts.

Just come across your excellent pages. New to the D70 and have also found overall underexposure plus mid tone exposure depression, even worse with built in flash or SB-600, so very keen to try your sReala curve. Obviously flash WB setting will still need an adjustment to take out excess blue but does your curve apply an overall warming adjustment across the board to correct the camera's general tendency to coolness? ie. will the other WB's need less warming adjustment afterwards? Also, have downloaded 2 versions of curve. Which is the final one? Thanks very much for the hard work. Tom

I'm very happy that you're refining the sReala curve. I've always liked it better than the Optima and have experimented with it back to when it was called Digital_Fuji_Superia_Reala.ntc. At this point it looks as if sReala has matured enough to use it in a production environment. Thanks for the great work! P.S. It's also nice to see your return back to dpreview.com forums.

Newbie: I assume Cloudy-2/Sunny-3 refers to WB? And what do you use for EV?

Benjamin, I think the results of this curve are excellent. The dynamic range in these pictures are stunning for a D70 and I hope I can achieve the same results that you are having with this curve. Keep up the good work and thank you for your efforts.

Jeremy, it's just the other way around. NEF is always undoable, jpeg it is not.

these will affect a NEF, however, the effect is undoable, whereas in a jpg, it's not not undoable.

I was just wondering about custom curves. Is it correct that curves only apply to JPG shots. If you are shooting NEF with the D70, then your curves will NOT be applied to the picture. I shoot almost exclusively NEF with the D70, so I "curve" my photos in Photoshop.
