The underwing coverts are nearly all white with a much reduced patagial bar on the leading edge of the wing. Narrow barring on primaries and secondaries with the five primaries of the hand, darker toward their tips, and having heavier, widely spaced dark barring.

The Red-tail is our only eastern hawk that has a patagial bar, making for a quick, easy ID on most flying hawks.
