Here is a typical dusky throated, immature Red-throated Loon, showing whitish cheek, bill fully tapered, sharply pointed appearing almost all the time upturned due to a kick up on the lower mandible, where a Pacific's bill is stiletto shaped, evenly tapered top and bottom, slightly straighter sided till the point and again usually held parallel to the water. Pacific shows a clean sided division at the sides of the neck even through their first summer.
