Frigatebird -Magnificent - 8-30-05 Pickwick Lake

This was one heck of a bird to watch slowly sail by on the Tennessee River. Just as I located the bird and was getting Mike Todd and Joe Guinn on it, my phone rang. Mark Green was calling from the dam to report on a Long-tailed Jaeger that he had been watching with Jon Dunn, it had been chased off by a Frigatebird! I told him we were looking at one at that time also and we found out we probably were looking at the same bird.

The bird came south and flew near enough for us to watch it drop down and catch a fish which it has in its beak in this photo. Steve McConnell was down at Bear Creek at the MS-AL line and I called him to tell him what we had. He called back later to say a Frigatebird had flown right over his head about 45 minutes later. His bird was an immature male ours was an adult female!
