Mike took this shot while the bird was preening, if you look closely, the tail is spread and cocked to the left. You can see the edges of the outside tail feathers show no white but are rufous edged. This and the birds deep coloration are indicative of a male of the eastern race of Columbina talpacoti. It is found along the eastern slope in Mexico from Tampaulipas south through all of the Yucatan Peninsula and into Central America. Columbina t. eluta of Western Mexico is much paler and usually has white tips to outside corner of tail.
