I'm famous for terrible shots but this distant shot is about the average look you get at a Surf Scoter, they seem to always be near the distant shore rather than on your side of the lake;o) This species like the Black Scoter is showing up in a lot of places this year.
There is not much mistaking that bill shape, facial pattern and size but a sleeping Surf is another question.
