When the bird stretched it's wing you could see the white stripe on the lower edge of the speculum. It is much narrower than the white bands on the Mallard's wings and the white is not seen on Black Ducks. Some back cross Black/Mallard will show a white band on speculum but usually there are other field marks that don't jive with Mottled.
