Limpkin- Hatchie Bottoms, TN.

This unusual and rare visitor just about anywhere outside of Florida, especially off the coast and the second for TN, was found by Alex Wyss while on a canoe trip on the Hatchie River. After slogging through the swamp on 3 successive trips, I happened to turn around one day and got this shot of the bird as it slunk into the under growth. It was hot, muddy and muggy but worth it as Joe Guinn and I were rewarded with this brief walk off. It reminded me of Big Foot the way it plodded along.

I wasn't with Jeff when he got this picture but I was with him on one of those 3 previous trips and let me tell you - whew, talk about battling the elements! It was August of 1999 and it was near 100 degrees with high humidity, mosquitoes, cottonmouths, and giant ragweed over our heads! We did hear the bird give it's great call that day and
this goes down as another memorable day birding with the Ol' Coot! I was fortunate enough to see this bird before it left the area. It was first seen on 27 July 1999 and was last seen on 18 September 1999 but was very elusive during it's stay!
