This is why so many loons are hanging around, many Common Loons are in an extensive primary molt prior to their journey north. The Yellow-billed in the back ground has a full complement of feathers and is road ready. Last week, we did see the other Yellow-billed loon take flight. It reminded me of the flight of the Spruce Goose, of aviation fame, as it lumbered along for take off and then flew just barely above the waves.
