First State Record of Black-throated Sparrow - Lincoln Co, TN

Morris Williams discoved this bird the morning of November 29, 2005 at the edge of some woods that is being timbered. The bird was seen all day in some tree limbs strewn in piles at the edge of a fallow, weedy field. After a 250 mile run, I got there just as the bird had gone to roost late in the day and stayed over to try to get some photos for documentation. The photos are poor, as I did not want to push the bird. I set up my stool about 50 feet away from the piles and for the next few hours I felt like I was watching a slow motion tennis match, scanning back and forth. The bird was seen only 3 times in 5-1/2 hours.

The bird is feeding with Swamp, Song and Savannah Sparrows on pigweed, lambs quarter and sickle pod seed found under and around these piles and windrows of tree limbs. It looks like a good place for a Bewick's Wren to show.

After viewing the photos, I think the bird is of the western race "deserticola" having very little white visible in the tail and a brownish caste to the back. Hopefully others will get better photos.
