we arrive in Olomouc, former capital of Moravia |
it's a quiet Sunday, so we walk into the old town |
the eastern side has a long history of religious centers and buildings |
it makes for a very pleasant walk... |
Olomouc is also famous for arts, as a home for composers and an opera house |
about this part of the town's history we are less certain... |
we arrive at the biggest town square, the Horni namesti |
it has a famous Holy Trinity column... |
...and is ringed by large old buildings |
Olomouc is also known for fountains; there are several on this square alone |
architectural details reveal the town's link to the Austrian Empire |
rounding the square, we head for the town hall |
this astronomical clock was rebuilt in the 1950s with a Soviet aesthetic |
Svobody boulevard has a hint of Vienna |
the Dolni square is being excavated in preparation for rehabilitation |
some interesting finds under the cobbles |
on a back street, heading toward the old town wall... |
...and down into the gardens lining the Mlynsky creek |
back up in old town again, we rejoin the boulevards |
looking toward Republic square, it couldn't be much calmer |
Republic square is ringed with museums... |
...and we pop in to the Regional Museum, which shows history and nature |
then to the excellent Museum of Modern Art |
an interesting exhibit on Czech and other photographers |
then a great collection of Czech and Austrian decorative arts |
at the top of the museum is a view over part of the city |
back on the street, we start our way back to the hotel |
and then we wave goodbye to Olomouc...! |
