PCA-CHS 2017 Tour No. 8 -- Drive to PCA Potomac's "Gathering of the Faithful," Sept. 16

This 76-mile drive took 26 PCA Chesapeake participants in 14 cars on scenic back roads and old-fashioned highways through Maryland's Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties as we headed to Shepherdstown, West Virginia. After about two hours on the road, we arrived at the Bavarian Inn, the new venue of PCA Potomac’s “Gathering of the Faithful.” This annual event is a car show and social that primarily celebrates 356s and secondarily other Porsches.

The 356 and overall turnout was less this year than in previous "Gatherings." There were three major contributing factors: (1) The event had originally been scheduled for Sept. 2nd, but had to be postponed because of heavy rain on that day. (2) On Sept. 16th, the rain date, there were two other major Porsche-related events nearby -- the PCA National Office Open House in Columbia, MD, and a Porsche 356 swap meet in southeastern Pennsylvania. And (3) Shepherdstown, WV, might have been too far for many PCA Potomac Region members, most of whom live in the DC area.

However, this year's PCA Chesapeake turnout was probably the largest ever at this event. It would have been more than double in size, if not for factors 1 and 2.

Our driving tour started in Reisterstown, MD, and ended in Shepherdstown, at the Bavarian Inn, where PCA Chesapeake tour participants joined PCA Potomac members in examining and admiring seven outstanding examples of Porsche's first production sports car -- the 356. This tour was the eighth event offered in 2017 by the Tour & Rally Committee of the Porsche Club of America's Chesapeake Region.
