Notable Sports Cars and Roadsters From Japan -- 2007-2013

Sports cars and roadsters from Japan are not often featured in collector-car shows or seen in museum exhibits in the United States, except perhaps on the West Coast. To help make up for this lack of prominence, I went through my various photo galleries and picked out some notable examples for this new image collection begun in August 2012. I hope to add more photos and more cars to this special gallery in the weeks to come. There are a number of significant and desirable examples that are missing here, such as the 2nd generation Mazda RX-7, the various iterations of the Toyota MR2 and some cars from the glory days of Mitsubishi. I have seen them on the road over the years, but I have yet to photograph them. I also hope to include here photos of the Mazda 878B race car, which was the overall winner of the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Of the automobiles featured here now, the most valuable in dollar terms is the 1967 Toyota 2000 GT that belonged to the late car magazine publisher Robert E. Petersen. A 1968 model of this rare car was sold for $627,000 in August 2012 in a Pebble Beach collector-car auction conducted by Gooding and Company. That record price was broken in April 2013 when RM Auctions sold a yellow 1967 model for $1.155 million. Only 337 Toyota 2000 GTs were built in the 1960s, of which about 60 were imported into the United States.

Also included in this gallery is the most popular sports car and roadster ever made -- the Mazda MX-5 Miata. As of 2012, Mazda had sold more than 900,000 units of this extremely enjoyable car. It has been on Car & Driver magazine's annual "10 Best" list 14 times since its introduction in 1989, including eight consecutive times from January 2006 through January 2013.
