Bird Attacks Glass Windows in My House -- December 2017 to January 2018

A crazy bird repeatedly attacked the glass windows in my house for seven consecutive days. On the first day, Dec. 28, 2017, it attempted to fly though the glass hundreds of times for five and a half hours. Over the next six days, it persisted but gradually reduced and shortened its efforts. I had never seen anything like this before. There were other birds flying around my house on each of those days. But none of them even came close to trying what this one crazy bird was doing. I wasn't surprised that it came back for the seventh day, on Jan. 3, 2018, and repeated its odd behavior for about an hour.

The next three days were not only frigid but also windy. My crazy bird did not make an appearance; practically no other bird did. But on Jan. 7, 8 and 9, the winds calmed down and the crazy bird came back -- for about 40 minutes on the 8th and for just a few minutes on the 7th and the 9th. Alas, I had no chance to take pictures of it on the 9th. It kept coming back for short visits practically every day until Feb. 6, 2018. (I will post more photos when I find some time to spare.)

Around the middle of January, a friend sent me a link to an article on the Web site of the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The article explains why birds sometimes attack glass windows. They are being territorial, protecting an area where they are nesting. Apparently, when they see their reflection, they think it's another bird encroaching on their territory. So they attack it. And, somehow, despite repeated collisions with the glass, they don't realize they are attacking "themselves." They don't stop behaving this way until their nesting is over.

As might be expected, I have taken hundreds of photos of these "territorial" visits. Here are some of them. I used flash in three of these shots. There are additional caption details on my P900 shots because I just recently acquired this amazing 83x super-zoom camera. My crazy bird seemed determined to show me that my purchase was a good decision. It absolutely was.
