Every fair-weather Saturday, hundreds of car enthusiasts in Virginia, D.C., Maryland and neighboring states wake up early to bring their toys to this 7-to-9 a.m. gathering about half an hour west of Washington, D.C. Usually, most attendees come and go, with some staying only for a short while. Many show up sporadically, some with a different car each time, so most cars tend to be different from one Saturday to the next, practically making every visit worthwhile.

On Dec. 21, I joined this weekly gathering during its final half hour, as the cars and attendees were thinning out. I was told the turnout had been strong earlier that mild morning.
