The first three photos here were taken with a Nikon D300 using the following white-balance settings: automatic, incandescent and 2500K. The fourth photo was taken with a Nikon Coolpix P5000 using its automatic white-balance mode. All four shots were handheld and are posted here as they came out of the cameras; no post-processing was applied to them. However, I resized them for online viewing.

The Nikon D300's poor auto white-balance performance under incandescent lighting is typical of DSLRs, regardless of brand. Mystifying, to say the least.
