8th December, fine drying day

I heard a story recently about the famous artist David Hockney and his mother.
She was out from Yorkshire visiting for the first time at his fancy house in California.
He took her outside and showed her the fabulous vista,
and all the plush villas nestling in the valley.
She shook her head and said 'that's terrible'. Her son asked what she meant, was it not a beautiful sight?
'A fine drying day like this and theres's not one person has their washing out'

woooo... this is a great shot! I really like how you have position the house, in the lower third, gives is a sense of isolation. This has a fanciful feel. My compliments on an excellent daily. (About your comment on my image.. I did bring a book... good thing; I hung around for several hours only to have the judge say the case was settled without a jury. Second time this has happened.)

Wi a cloud like that I'd be taking it in sharpish!

The moral here is never forget who you are & where you come from...wonderful story, Andy.
This place remind me of Hawarth, the Bronte home. It's a great shot you have there though I think those black clouds spell the end of drying day.

I do like a bit of Hockney! A couple of years back I almost bought one of his sketches for Catherine's Christmas, although I think the delight of owning a Hockney would have been dwarfed by the pricetag. I think Daves Ma and Catheine would get along well.

Wonderful photo ... I love how it's is dwarfed by the intensity of the sky.
I miss that about being way out in the country (I'm in a populated rural area - not an oxymoron, I swear)... I used to get up before the kids woke and hang my wash out to dry.. i loved the smell of freshness in its folds..

I'm with Hockney's ma....the conodominium rules where I live say NO drying lines and the mega suburb I just left said NO drying lines on your private yard, no less (you can't have your boat trailer visible from the street or park your motor home/trailer for more than 72 hours)...
who lives in this house? is it on a farm?
love the light...
Guest 08-Dec-2004 16:55
The light here is amazing. Great photo.
