In the company of Ravens

This gallery includes my experience with a small community of ravens living in the foothills of Kamloops, B.C. Canada. Other raven photographs in this gallery are from the beautiful islands of Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, and the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada These are bright and marvelous birds. These were wonder filled experiences. Camera bodies: Canon 1DmkII /1DMk4,30D. Lens used most often: 500 f/4 L with 1.4 tele-converter... Your Votes and comments are welcome :-)

Wonderful images and great insights into the lives of these most interesting birds. Some years ago, I read "Ravens in Winter" - a fascinating tale of research into how these birds find buried food, told for the layperson. It is a recommended read.

Amazing, ravens are black and extremely difficult to photograph without washing out all other parts of the image.

Thank you so much for sharing your photos of these beautiful birds. Our school is having a Poe-fest, and the art students will benefit tremedously from seeing these birds in their habitat, and free movement. Maybe we'll share some pictures with you!

# 64 AND 106...so amazing. Like a diary from the raven nation. All these images represent the fullness of their experience, minus the dumpster diving of course. So many people are attracted to their call. Two generations of ravens have patiently played with me, teaching their language, just as a kindergarten teachers instruct in reading. Always face the way they fly: show them your visage. This is the real deal. I just wish I had a recorder with me when I heard the courtship song, the laughing song, and the egg hatching celebration song. An Alaskan raveneer.

i love the irridescent blueblack of raven, looks much like the Great Mystery Void for which raven is messenger.

Amazing gallery, Norman! Been here before and left comments, but these birds and your work with them still fascinate me. I think ravens/crows are such underrated birds. Up close and/or photographed well, they are among the most beautiful of birds, and you have done them justice here. (V)

great photos i love ravens i have had the pleasure of having two adopt me at the beach arear where i go i named them tic n tac they will fly on my shopulder and walk with me well hop with me on the beach they are incredibly intelligent they know my auto from down the highway i feed them peanuts they are so very dear to me.al massera

Your photos are very remarkable and beautifull! I have a pair of ravens nesting in a small wooded area at the back of my property. Everyday I look for the mysterious and intelligent birds. We first noticed the pair when we bought our house in Oct. 2004. The two ravens are here year round. I've deccided to learn more about these magnificent creatures and am trying to get some photos of the pair. Thanks for this lovely and superb collection of photos!

I was looking for inspiration for my wood engraving Christmas card revolving around Ravens. I lived in the mountains for a while and I love these birds. I miss them now that I am back east. Thank you for inspiration and bringing back memories of these remarkable birds. When I die I would like to be considered smart enough to come back a Raven.

Not only captures the action, the expressions, but the incredible details of the feathers. In Pennsylvania we have a breeding population of ravens (north of the farming country where I live), a new and wonderful thing for us. I am an artist and writer interested in middle reader and young adult fantasy, based on the natural world. Raven has swooped into more than one tale. These pics (along with the excellent books of Bernd Heinrich) are an inspiration. Keep up the great work.

Incredible study!!!!Your photos have brought forth the magnifigence of the powerful Raven. I am visiting in Northern Alberta and have the opportunity to visit with these birds daily. Thank you so much for sharing these photos. Raven is a huge part of my life, guarding me, warning me of upcoming traffic hazards (narrow mountain roads, elk), permitting me to feel safe in areas where an old woman might not otherwise be safe. I "speak" Raven, but not well -- it hurts my throat. What a joyful thing to be "in the company of Ravens."

Beautiful photos, our ravens look a little different than your but very simular. Ruidoso, New Mexico is in the south central mountains of New Mexico at 7 to 12 thousand feet elevation. I observed approximately 100 of them circulting just before dark and an approcing snow storm. I have been documenting their language for about 5 years and understand what they say to each other. I assisted a young one that blew out of the nest and it lived in our back yard and in a screened pen at night so the cats wouldn't get it until it flew away in about 3 weeks. Still visits me. Thank you for these fantastic pictures! Due to complications with Lyme disease, I was unable to get out this spring to hang with the mated pair of ravens I have been studying for the past 5 years. Your photos brought them indoors for me, and number 91 in particular just captured my heart. Such intelligence and beauty. I love my ravens, and they have come to know me and fly down to greet me when I show up. Keep up the good work.

Wonderful images of the Raven. There is more to this big, beautiful bird than meets the eye. Currently I am building a 24"h raven, stylized, out of clay.
Your pictures have been a help and pleasure.
There is a pair of ravens nesting high in the tree in back of my house. Soon the chicks should be ready to leave - I hope they'll be well - I have a love for ravens.

This is a great collection of photographs of juvenile ravens (you can tell by their pink mouths)! I am a wild bird rehabilitator, and one of our permanent residents is a common raven female. After your great "Eagle & Salmon", "Valley of Eagles" and "Snowy Owl Spirit Portraits" series, with this raven gallery you have once again managed to compose an entirely new variation on your favourite theme, north american and canadian nature and wildlife.
"In the Company of Ravens", indeed! Judging from these shots, you must have managed to become one of them for a while. In mythology, the raven is supposed to be a shapeshifter, but in this case it looks as if it went the other way round, and you were the one who transformed into a raven!
The editing is also exceptional, and takes full advantage of the careful shooting. Amazing!

Rarely do you see a shot that so clearly shows the almost purple irredescence on a raven's feathers! Very well done! -BJ.

company (minus a camera) and also some rescue work with them...they are so
intelligent and their social structure is beyond my ability of explaining.
