This is a land of stunning rice paddy landscapes and minority villages. Two main groups are the Dong and the Miao. Each has a heritage of textile production seen in beautiful costumes. Jewelry in the form of torques and large earrings is prized. Visitors are greeted with rice wine, songs and lusheng pipe music. Performance for tourists is a way for minority groups to preserve their old cultures in light of forces of modernization. Some groups still wear their dress at the markets. The first photo (called "Dinner Pig") was selected in a juried group show on the theme of Dinner and exhibited at the Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City (curated by Harvey Stein).
