In '82 we hadn't even heard of Osama in Afghanistan yet. He was still kicking up trouble in Sudan. In the mid-80's, when he came to Afghanistan he helped the Mujahideen and the CIA defeat the Soviet invaders. After they were defeated, in '89, the CIA left him (to fester) in Afghanistan.
