Shandur Top clearing

Shandur Top, Northern Areas

The mists have lifted and the 21,492 ft/6551 m peak of Buni Zom can be seen. Buni Zom mountain group is one of the most unexplored mountain areas in the world. It has been climbed only 3 times and a total of only 7 people have reached the summit. The first ascent was in 1957 by 2 New Zealanders. They approached from the east (Gordoghan Zom glacier) and first climbed the north face of Buni Zom, then descended to the north col and finally climbed the north ridge of the main peak. In August of 1975 3 members of a Japanese expedition reached the summit by climbing the south face and then following the south west ridge. The third and last ascent was in 1979 by two American climbers, climbing the southwest ridge.
