HALF HULLS or HALF HULL MODELS :

Once upon a time, almost four decades ago, in the U.S. north east there was Tom Harsh and his great Trident Studios - The Scale Model Company. In Canada, on the Great Lakes, there was John Devan's terrific and popular half hulls and some models. Devan's not been doing models for many years.

Harsh sold his Scale Model Company, the boat plans, the existing molds, inventory, etc. as part of a sale and non-compete agreement with Dean Derosha. The name Trident Studio name was not part of the sale. Per his agreement, Tom was to only build old sea vessel models. He was also to provide new molds as they were needed by Derosha.

"Somehow" and despite the written non-compete agreement, Harsh ALSO sold his business to Andrew Burton and a "new Trident" again started making and selling half hulls as Trident Studio / The Half Model Company. Sure looks like Burton and Derosha both got sold by Harsh.

Having done business deals with contracts and with just a handshake . . . on face . . . this one has an unpleasant odour around it. Oh well.


Have bought stock half hulls from "old Trident" and from Dean Derosha.

With other boat owners, compared a stock model ordered from "new Trident" in 2004 to one from Scale Model Company. The one from Trident was returned as it was no better than the Scale Model Company product . . . but the one from Trident cost a fair bit more.

Have no dog in this long standing "disagreement" but know good value for dollar when see it.


Your choice from amongst these two and others is up to you. My Scottish ancestry led the writer to do business with The Scale Model Company.


HALF MODELS & MODELS :

Half models also feature a deck and coach/dog house details. A few have a rig with sails. Each of these steps is progressively more money.


FULL MODELS :

The cost of a good full model of your boat can equal that of a nice tender for your boat.
