The smallest but most sprightly of the 'Nonsuch family'

Kristen Posey wrote from the Gulf coast of Louisiana in March 2007:

One thing the International Nonsuch Assn. doesn't mention is the Naiad line of boats. Much like our beloved Nonsuches, these are wishbone rigged catboats from the same folks. The main difference is, they're a bite-sized 18 feet & there are only a few in existence. They're rare, but I think really special for their trailer-sailing abilities.

Arthur Langley wrote from Maine in March 2007:

As NONSUCH is an ongoing legacy of Gordon Fisher's fertile mind's very great knowledge of, technical insight about, and love of sailing . . . NAIAD's legacy is another testament to his love of sailing and of these special rigs on lovely sailing craft. I would not presume to tell of Gordon's joy of his NAIAD as I only know of these very special moments second hand from Ed Botterell. I will tell you that Gordon commissioned the design from Mark Ellis, for his personal enjoyment at his cottage on Lac Memphramagog in the Eastern Townships, south of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec.

And as for the name NAIAD, see . . . http://www.pantheon.org/articles/n/naiads.html . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Naiad . . . http://www.worldwar1.co.uk/light-cruiser/hms-apollo.html . . . . . . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Naiad_(F39)

Gordon's love of . . . the sea, his Scottish and Canadian heritage, his dog, and history saw his boats often named after historic ships and after places in Scotland . . . some of them being THERMOPYLAE, MANITOU, ISLE OF SKYE, SKYE, TERRIER, NONSUCH, WEATHERVANE, and lastly NAIAD.

Not more than 20 of these were built. At least one is known to have been totally destroyed.

We are trying to find as many of these boats as possible. If you own one or know the location and/or owner of one please contact . . . arthur_langley@hotmail.com
