HURRICANE KATRINA, BEFORE AND AFTER

Three weeks after Hurricane Katrina, while searching through the remains of my home, I came across all my CD’S where I had stored my previous Photographic Images. Though still wet and caked with mud, I carefully gathered them up, gave them a good bath in clean water, dried them between paper towels and sent them away for safe keeping. Later, when I purchased a new computer, I learned I had salvaged every Image. I now began to photograph the “AFTER” Images of each and every Image I had saved, unfortunately, many of my older Images were stored on floppy disk, to my dismay none of those Images were salvageable. Here are several of my pre Katrina salvaged Images along with the “AFTER” shots.

I really feel sorry for New Orleans and the Golf Coast. With Bush running around in plaines and not good coordination on the ground the recovery non-effort will be a black eye in the history of the US forever. So much devistation and so little caring on the part of the American people!

We just got home about an hour ago from New Orleans and Biloxi. Drove on Highway 90 along the Gulf all the way to Biloxi. The area has come a long way, many new buildings; however there are still many vacant lots with devasated trees and concrete block which were once part of a building. The trees still look stricken. I admire the people of that part of the Gulf Coast, including New Orleans, I was sad just looking at what is left and I never saw the before. We plan to vacation there again.

I visited Biloxi a month before Katrina, but I have not been back again. I have never seen all these before and after pictures. It is so sad and so shocking still to see the extent of the devastation. It is still hard to believe all these years later. May God bless all those who suffered losses and still do.

I worked for Mississippi Power and was performing storm duty when the hurricane arrived. I saw the waters come in Pascagoula block by block until a majority of the town was under several feet of water. This horrific storm has forever changed the beautiful gulf coast and personally don't think we can ever recover. As long as I live I will not forget what I saw and what we all went through together. It still brings tears to my eyes all these years later. But we must never forget what we had and what we can hopefully recover not matter how much time or cost!!! May god bless everyone that has edured this tragic event and still deals with it everyday and most likely will for the rest of our lives.

I really liked Bay Satint Louis. Visited twice as atourist camping at the Buccaneer State Park. It is a pitty to see the destruction and I hope people got and will get all the support that is still needed.

My family moved to Biloxi about a year after hurricane Camille, and the coast looked a lot like your after pics at the time. We had to take my older brother to a special school before my Mom dropped my younger brother and I off at our school. We traveled a long way along the beach every day. Your pictures help to remind me, and hopefully others, that we have been through this before and rebuilt and made our coast beautiful once again, and we will do it again as many times as it takes. Beauty such as this lives on in the hearts and souls of our citizens and is worth fighting for.

My husband and I thought we would travel to The Grand Casino in Gulfport to celebrate my husband's earlier this month. Although we live nearby in New Orleans, I had no idea that the casino is no longer there. All that remains is the parking garage. It was my first trip riding down the coast from Gulfport to Biloxi since the storm. It reminded me of years before riding down the same highway after Camille - only worse.

We traveled to Waveland and Bay St. Louis during February 2008--we were overwhelmed by what we saw, especially since 2 1/2 years have passed since Katrina. We saw many of the places in your photos and our hearts go out to all who are working hard to "come back" in Waveland. So much was lost--thank you for sharing your photos.

Donn and all -- You CAN still help with Katrina recovery. The United Methodist Church and Habitat For Humanity are two of the charities still at work. Both organizations need funds as well as volunteer labor to repair or replace homes throughout the hurricane zone. Thanks to NoMoFilm for posting these photos. I just returned from a weeklong workcamp in Mississippi and am able to refer my friends around the world to your photos for a larger view of the devastation than they could get from the few snapshots I took.

I appreciate so much the time you have taken to help people understand what this area of the country has endured. I have never been to Biloxi until spring break of 2008. I was amazed at the destruction that is still evident today and angered that the media is still not talking about it every day until something more is done. I live in North Louisiana and we did as much as possible to help the evacuees but I now know it was so little and there is still so much more to be done. I came back home with a resolve to do more. I don't know what...but anything is better than nothing. I am going to submit some photos I took to the local papers and encourage readers to visit websites like yours so people realize there is still so much work to be done. Thank you so much for reminding us to never give up.

Wow seeing Beach Blvd before and after...man I miss those crazy nights bouncing back from the fire dog to the good life. Hopefully that strip of the Bay will come back to life. I miss it. I use to drive in on the weekends from NOLA to hang out with my friends from the Bay and Waveland and end the night at the waffle house on 90 across from the hopsital. Of course after a few drinks at third base first. Thanks for posting these gems...those were great times that will never be forgotten. Al Hodge

i was only in bay of st loius for 1 day, just 2 weeks before katrina, we had lunch in the firedog saloon and went across the road to paddle in the ocean. Right at that point, stood in the water, and surrounded by beauty i said to my fellow travellers "i have to come back here, it is gorgeous". I am from England, unfortunately my luggage, including camera arrived in America 3 days after i did so no photos were taken of our visit. So to find this sight was fantastic, and devastating at the same time. How did Oak Alley plantation survive the hurricane.

Thankyou for sharring this wonderfull gallery. I spent three years living down here while I was stationed at the NASA Center and they were some of the best memories I have durring my 20's. It is hard to see the destruction left by Katrina and what she has taken away, but I still have my memories and she can't take those.

Wonderful gallery. Growing up in Waveland was one of the most wonderful times of my life. I was there shortly after the storm to gather what I could of my parents belongings before they were forced to tear down what was left of their 100 year old home. The storm stripped me of any naive sense of permanence I had. For this I am thankful. Take time to see the beautiful things in the world today as they may not be there tomorrow.

We visited Bay St. Louis and Waveland the summer before the hurricane. It was such a beautiful area and we so enjoyed the gift shops, restaurants and the Bay St. Louis Bed and Breakfast. It is hard to believe that none of that exists anymore. It devasted many lives, particularly a family member who had just found her niche in this beautiful Bay community and now has to live elsewhere because she lost everything. Jim & Christa

The "before" pictures of the coast bring a heavy heart. I was raised in Waveland on St. Joseph Street, and my parents lived there for over 40 years. It was bad enough losing our home to Katrina but it was worse losing our entire city and all of my memories of childhood. It's now all just a dream as there's nothing there to remind me of my past - Waveland Elementary, City Hall, the jetty at the end of Coleman Ave...it's heartbreaking. Your photos are a testimony of what once existed. They are very precious. Thanks for sharing.

I was a resident of Pearlington pre-Katrina. Pictures tell a million stories, but seeing it first-hand blows your mind. There was not a house left untouched by Katrina in Pearlington. It will take YEARS to recover what was lost in the rural areas of Hancock County, but they have not given up...a special thanks to the volunteers who have not forgotten Hancock County!

You take great photography. Your photos "before" capture the beauty of the area, and your photos after Katrina capture the devastation that the storm left. My heart goes out to all the victims and the recovery efforts.

I'm sure your pics, as touching as they are, do not show all the devastation. I have to say my heart is still aching for all the victims of this terrible hurricane. I hope the gov't gets on the ball and helps the way they should. Be safe this summer and thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your pictures, my brother lived on Bordage Street in Waveland, there is nothing there but dead brush, he is spending Mothers Day Weekend setting up a tent and cleaning up, I will be leaving Nashville next week to go visit, we will be planting a wildflower garden where "His little piece of Heaven" used to be. Thank you for this gallery. It shows pretty well how powerful and destructive she was when she decided to visit this place. There's not much to do about the forces of Mother Nature. She fights back against what we do to her, and I think she'll win in the end.
